Sennheiser HMEC 26-2 pilot headset

Sennheiser HMEC 26-2 Pilot Headset For Sale Cheap

AUDIO specialist Sennheiser, has unveiled the HMEC 26-2 pilot headset, the successor to its successful HMEC 26.

The company says the new headset features Improved comfort, optimum protection against handling noise and a higher sound pressure level.

"The 26 is popular with airline and business pilots," explains Jorg Buchberger, Business Segment Ma na ger Aviation at Sennheiser "The improvements made in the 26-2 are based on feedback we received from them."

The headband has been lengthened and the end pieces designed with a different angle to ensure the headset sits even more comfortably with a more evenly distributed contact pressure The newwder and softer cushions are securely held to the headband with a special fastener.

There is also greater stability for the microphone boom, which is made of a new steel material that keeps the microphone securely in its set position.

The 26-2 also has a new cable that makes it particularly insensitive to handling noise. Four coils in the otherwise straight cable isolate the headset acoustically from noise normally produced when the cable is moved in contact with the pilot's clothing.

The Best New Sound Around :: Sennheiser S1

Best Sennheiser S1 headset review onlineAn extremely comfortable headset - even after four hours!

Sennheiser has spent four years designing and developing its latest headset to compete with other top class headsets. But how does it stack up?

SENNHEISER'S new S1 Digital is aimed squarely at the premium GA headset market - ground currently occupied by the Bose A20 and Lightspeed Zulu.2.

Sennheiser have certainty taken seriously their venture into this end of the market, with a completely new headset design that bears little family resemblance to other Sennheiser GA headsets.

The firm got together with the BMW subsidiary DesignWorksUSA to help with the design and aesthetics of the headset, and the result is a modern, sculpted appearance and some innovative design features.

The earcups are very substantial with good-sized oval openings. which contribute to an overall weight of the headset of a hefty 470g. While they are big. the earcups are hinged at the end of the headband so they can be folded inwards to provide a very compact package when not in use.

The ear cushions have a softer section near the temples to help stop the arms of glasses being pressed hard against the side of your head, and to provide a better noise seat when glasses are worn. There's also a useful feature whereby the contact pressure of each earcup can be individually adjusted to one of three different levels, thereby providing some control over the balance between clamping force and noise attenuation.

Overall, despite its weight and bulk, the S1 proved to be extremely comfortable during our testing. On several occasions I wore the headset for over four hours with no discomfort at all.

Sennheiser have included in the S1 a new feature that allows the frequency response for the ikHz to 6kHz range to be boosted in three stages - essentially providing a 'treble boost'. This can be done individually for each side using small switches under the control unit battery cover. The objective is to provide improved speech intelligibility for people who have less-than-perfect sensitivity to speech frequencies.

I set up the headset with the maximum treble boost and found that R/T intelligibility was never less than superb. The treble boost feature did seem to make a difference - which, sadly, says something about the effect of 30 years of noisy cockpits on my own hearing!

Another new feature included in the Si is what Sennheiser call 'Smart Update'. The idea is that by pressing a button on the side of one earcup the digital circuitry re-samples the noise environment and generates a new anti-noise signal optimised for that particular environment, rather than being based on fixed parameters. I tried the feature on several occasions and while it did seem to make some difference to the noise attenuation, I didn't find that it provided a huge improvement over 'standard'.

Comparisons of the noise-attenuation provided by top-end headsets tend to be somewhat subjective, but we had several people try the S1 in the air, and the consensus was that while the S1 Active Noise Reduction is good, but overall not quite as good as the other top units on the market.

In common with the other premium ANR headsets the S1 includes a mobile phone and music player interface. In the case of the S1 a Bluetooth interface is provided that supports both mobile phone connectivity and streaming music. Devices that support the AVRCP Bluetooth profile can be remotely controlled using the S1's control unit.

I tested the phone connectivity using a couple of different phones and found it worked well. In particular, the intelligibility of voice conversation - at both ends - was excellent, the best of any headset we've tested.

The music interface was no less impressive. I tested using the latest iPod Touch and was able to tuck the iPod away in a pocket, while using the S1's control unit to remotely fast-forward, skip tracks, etc. Considering the traditional limitations of Bluetooth and the noisy cockpit environment, the sound quality of the music streamed over the Bluetooth interface was outstanding.

Overall the Sennheiser S1 is a top-quality headset bristling with new innovative features that haven't been seen before. It offers good noise attenuation, excellent speech clarity, and provides worthy competition for the top headsets from Bose and Lightspeed. Very impressive.
