Prior to the Korean War, the helicopter was all however unknown, and rescue was unpredictable at finest for downed pilots and injured soldiers stranded behind opponent lines. Kirkland, a fighter pilot in the Pacific theatre in World War II, came to helicopter flying after the war practically by accident. "Helicopters of the Third Air Rescue Group were given credit for selecting up 846 pilots and aircrew from behind opponent lines throughout the Korean War," composes Richard Kirkland.
